Once you have completed the online learning, you will be able to move on to complete a practical session and competency assessment within a supported training environment. The practical element is not included.
Definition and Reasons for Blood Sampling
Within this section we will look at the definition of Venipuncture and some of the reasons why we take blood samples. We will also look at some of the common blood tests that are taken regularly.
Legal and Professional Considerations
Within this section, we will look at some of the main legal and professional issues that need to be considered before venipuncture takes place. These will include Competencies, Consent, Accurate record keeping and documentation.
Anatomy and Physiology
Within this section, we will review the anatomy and physiology associated with venipuncture, including the main areas for blood sampling within the routine practice and which are limited to registered and non-registered nursing staff.
Criteria for Vein Selection
Within this section, you will look at the criteria for selecting a vein for blood sampling as well as identifying the areas that you would be avoided if possible.
Within this section, you will learn about the various devices that can be used for blood sampling and some of their advantages and disadvantages.
