Venepuncture and Phlebotomy

Venepuncture and phlebotomy go hand-in hand, so our courses cover both the puncturing of a vein
(venepuncture) and the process of drawing blood from the venepuncture site (phlebotomy).

Our training course is for healthcare staff (Nurses, HCA’s, Senior Care Assistants and medical staff)
that is required to take blood samples from service-users.

Our course is aimed at healthcare professionals who wish to learn Phlebotomy and Training
as a new skill, or for staff who have previously trained but require a refresher course to
update their existing knowledge in line with the latest best practice guidelines.

The areas covered by this training:

  • Define Phlebotomy
  • Current Legislation, Record Keeping, Professionalism & Accountability
  • Be able to recognise the anatomy and physiology relevant to obtaining a venous blood sample.
  • Identify suitable veins from the ante-cubital fossa (ACF) for adults and children over 12 years
  • Explore the problems in identifying suitable veins
  • Identify complications and actions i.e. faint, anxiety, haematoma arterial puncture
  • Order of Draw
  • Demonstrate health and safety awareness issues related to Phlebotomy e.g. hand washing, needle stick injury, infection risk, and sharps disposal.
  • Simulation Session to safely practice performing venepuncture/ phlebotomy techniques and procedures to obtain venous blood samples.

(*this simulation session does not deem you to be competent in phlebotomy/ venepuncture, this is an opportunity to practice on simulation arms, you will receive a workbook at the end of the session to complete in your workplace by a competent/ trained mentor in phlebotomy to observe you under direct supervision until your workplace mentor deems you competent)
